PRE PRODUCTION SHOOTING QUESTIONS //

1.What is your intention in terms of how you plan to use the existing available light levels?

• The machine selected has a small tungsten light attached.  I plan on using it as a graphic element in the photo.
• Balance the fluorescents in the mech shop, using green filters.

2. What is the reason for your lens choice? (Do you want the compression of a long lens or the exaggerated perspective of a wide angle, fixed focal length or zoom)?

• I am not sure what Lens I would like to use.  I am going to reserve the 70-200 mm lens from the school, but will bring a few fixed focal length portrait lens as well.
• I would like to concentrate on the person (Their face) as the focus, rather than allowing the machine to overpower the photo.
• I do not want to skew perspective or use a wide angled lens.

3. What aperture do you plan to use and why?

• I have two thoughts on the photo I would like to take, one with a very shallow depth of field.  Maybe 2.8 or there about.  I want my subject to be in focus, but not so much of his environment.  Again, I imagine this portrait to be more about the subject than the machinery.
• The second shot I would like to attempt is a bit wider.  Full length.  There is a wall of cogs and I would like to frame the subject with the cogs.  I would like to have the shot appear a bit darker.  I may try this shot at F11.

4. What shutter speed to you plan to use and why?

• I will probably start at 1/125th and make adjustments from there.  I would like to use my aperture as my main base for settings and make other adjustments based on the look I am achieving from that.

5. Do you have enough available light to achieve these camera settings?

• No.  I will need to use flash to get the desired effects.

6. Do you have enough strobe to achieve these settings?

• Yes, I will need the use of the flash headed to achieve the look I would like to achieve.

7. Do you have too much light to achieve these settings?

• Not sure.  We did make a conscience decision to use a machine that is in a corner to allow us the space and freedom to move our lighting setups further back if needed to reduce the lighting in our setups.

8. Are there any technical problems that will need to be addressed at the shoot or in post-production?

• We will need a lightbulb for the on-machine light.
• We will need Pat to turn the power on for that socket (we pre-discussed that with him)
• The machine is in the corner, so we may have a dark gradient on the wall if lights are placed weird, or reflected lights in weird places.

9. How will you be addressing color balance?

• Green gels.

10. What is the equipment you will need for the shoot? You are welcome to include any other special requirements or pertinent information?

• Extension Cords x 5
• Profoto Kit
• 1 large strip softbox
• 1  med softbox
• 1 silver/white reflector
• cyber sync (1 trigger, 2 receivers)
• sync cord
• 2 light stands
• 2 green gels

And even as we joke in class about my love of cats and my teetered status as a “crazy cat lady” it seemed fitting that I chose the furry little felines that I share my home, my life and and heart with.

My choice in topic is not political, its not going to find the cure for cancer or ask you to answer any of life’s mysteries. I chose a topic that I love and that I am certain that I will continue with and continue to love.

I see photographing cats and animals as something I will grow with, something that I can learn to get better at and something that I will continue to enjoy.  I see this project expanding into other photo stories, most likely in some way shape or form cat related!

And I think that this is in the true essence of a successful photo story, a choice the artist makes to share a sliver or glimpse into something they hold dear.

(This is my one assignment this semester that features my cats. haha!)

HERDING CATS

Its an old saying that expresses how difficult it is to handle a group of people who all want to do something different. Generally this saying means that something is difficult, and perhaps a bit chaotic.

Life is simply that, difficult and perhaps a bit chaotic.  The therapeutic and calming benefits to pets has been extensively documented.  And I can attest with much authority to the same.

Marty, Minou and Manny give me hours joy.  They know when they are needed, they know when to be near.

They have free reign of my house (barring being allowed up on the counters in the kitchen), so often its funny to see the places their day takes them.  A boring pile of laundry is a haven when a beam of warm sun streams in from the window.  A small crevasse between two pieces of furniture become a tunnel of exploration.  A blanket transforms into the ultimate fort hide-a-way.

With the chaotic schedule and demands of school, trying to balance that work with my job, my marriage and my household it is taking its toll on me.

I take solace in those things that calm my stress, help me sleep, and make it all worth while getting up the next day and doing it all over again.

The soft melodic mur-murs of a cats purr is beautiful white noise!  Petting a soft appreciative cat is soothing (not only to the cat!)

I enjoy the simple pleasure of photographing my cats.  I photograph them, not for school projects, not for money, but for myself and my enjoyment.  Below are some of my favourite images of my cats.
